Embracing Remote Work: My First Month at Rooftop Twenty Two

Hello there! Sophie here the latest member of the Rooftop Twenty Two Family.

After recently completing my degree in Marketing, Innovation, and Technology at DCU, I was eager to put my skills to the test and jump into the world of all things digital marketing. Join me as I reflect on my first month with Rooftop Twenty Two while embracing the remote work life from the beautiful city of Valencia, Spain.

As an Account Executive, my primary responsibility lies in curating compelling social media content and digital account management for our clients. My daily duties range from brainstorming engaging campaign ideas to crafting persuasive copy and helping bring content to life with our design team.  I have the privilege of working closely with our clients to bring their brands to life in the digital space. Despite working in Valencia in Spain, the physical distance has not hindered my ability to connect with the Rooftop Team. From the moment I stepped into the ‘virtual’ office, the team at Rooftop Twenty Two extended a warm welcome, making me feel right at home and involved in their banter. Even though I work remotely, the company’s culture of inclusivity and collaboration shines through our daily interactions- my favourite being the scramble to pick a win of the week come Friday morning. Whether it’s a quick Google Chat message or our morning WIPs, the team is always close at hand to give support, and guidance while having a good laugh

My Work

Already I’ve had the exciting opportunity to take on the responsibility of creating social media content for a diverse range of clients, including Irish Landmark Trust, McCarthy Insurance Group and 3: Rock. However, it was working The Irish Landmark Trust content that truly stood out for me so far. Tasked with finding creative solutions and fresh ways to promote their properties, I created the ‘Dog-friendly Getaways’ post. This was a different way to promote their properties while also creating content with value for users.

Another great opportunity I have been given is to take over the Rooftop Twenty Two’s own social media accounts and give the content a revamp. Despite being a digital marketing agency ourselves, it is easy for our own socials to fall through the cracks as we prioritise client work. That’s why I aim to concentrate on raising our own social media platforms to the same top-notch standard we maintain for our clients.

The new content gives us a chance to showcase our own expertise and talent while engaging with our followers and attracting new ones. Taking over the company’s social media accounts will not only allow me to sharpen my content creation skills but also deepened my understanding of the Rooftop Twenty Two brand and ethos within the company.

I’ve had to adapt and embrace a multitude of changes, particularly when it comes to the company’s processes and technologies. One of the most significant adjustments has been familiarising myself with the various processes and workflows used within R22. From project management to task allocation via ClickUP, Rooftop Twenty Two has a well-defined system in place to ensure seamless collaboration and efficient execution. Despite needing time to get used to these new approaches, embracing the processes has allowed me to integrate into the team and understand the bigger picture of how our projects come together.

I have also had the opportunity to explore and master new technologies that are essential to our work. The team have introduced a variety of technologies and platforms into my repertoire. For instance, I quickly dove into using Figma, a powerful design tool, to create visually compelling graphics and mockups for our clients.  These tools are integral to our work at Rooftop, other examples being ClickUp for task management and WordPress for content editing and website development.

Already, I have made significant strides in becoming more comfortable with the tools and technologies utilised at Rooftop Twenty Two, and I’m eager to continue expanding my proficiency in them

My Time In Valencia

While the pandemic has transformed the traditional office environment, Rooftop Twenty Two have definitely embraced remote work and the opportunities it provides. One of the greatest advantages of remote work has been the freedom to choose your workspace. Personally, working remotely from Valencia has been an absolute dream come true.

On sunny days, I find myself setting up my makeshift office in one of the city’s parks or heading to the local co-working cafe. This allows me to embrace the Spanish lifestyle, while also tackling my daily tasks. The local picnic areas and serene surroundings definitely provide the perfect backdrop for creativity to flourish.

And when it’s time for a well-deserved break, I can indulge in the beauty of Valencia. Whether it’s exploring the charming streets, immersing myself in the local culture, or simply enjoying a leisurely lunch in the park, there’s no shortage of opportunities to recharge and find inspiration. Generally, on my lunch break, you’ll find me soaking up the sun in the local park, making sure to take full advantage of my ‘siesta’ time. Hopefully, my tan lines will reflect this come September.

I’m very grateful for the opportunity to work with Rooftop while also being able to embrace travel and work abroad.

It’s like having the best of both worlds. Once I have my laptop and wifi I’m all good to go, so why not live and work abroad? While living abroad, I can still progress my career, and also embrace local culture, visit new cities and experience Spanish life (after 5:30 pm), thankfully Spanish life doesn’t kick off till late anyways!

Of course, while working remotely allows for a certain level of flexibility and freedom, it’s important to strike a balance between work and personal life. Establishing a routine, setting boundaries, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial to ensuring optimal productivity. I’m also looking forward to being back in the office come September and getting to know the team better face-to-face.

To conclude, my first month has been an incredible learning experience, allowing me to sharpen my skills in digital marketing, expand my knowledge of emerging technologies, and gain deeper insights into the world of social media. A big thank you to all of the team for being so welcoming and for all of their help. They have made the transition very easy for me, and have made me feel part of the team.

I’m looking forward to seeing where my Rooftop Twenty Two adventure takes me and embracing all the exciting opportunities that lie ahead. Stay tuned for more updates as I navigate this exciting new chapter of my career!
